Advanced Arthroscopic Surgery

What is an arthroscope?

The arthroscope is a thin metal tube that is inserted into the joints. It contains a light source, a video camera and a lens system that allows the orthopaedic surgeon to visualize images of the inside of the joint on a monitor.

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat joint disorders. Through an initial incision of less than 1 cm the arthroscope is inserted and through additional incisions instruments are inserted to help perform the procedure.

Which joints are frequently treated by doctors at Orthokinetic centers?

Most often arthroscopy is used to treat knee and shoulder disorders. Elbow, ankle and fist follow in order of frequency. The number of conditions treated arthroscopically has been steadily increasing in recent years.

What conditions are treated arthroscopically in Orthokinetic centers?

  • Arthroscopic surgery has become routine in a number of conditions such as the reconstruction of cruciate knee ligaments or the treatment of meniscus injuries.
  • Rotator cuff injuries or instability of the shoulder joint are routinely treated arthroscopically although there are still surgeons who prefer the classic open treatment of these injuries.
  • Increasingly acromio-clavicular joint arthrosis, coraco-clavicular ligament reconstruction and long biceps tendon injuries are being treated arthroscopically.1
  • In elbow cartilage lesions (osteochondritis dissecans), simple joint stiffness or lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) can be treated arthroscopically with results similar to open surgery in the hands of surgeons who are super-specialized in the treatment of these lesions.
  • Arthroscopic treatment of triangular cartilage lesions of the fist, diagnostic arthroscopy of any joint, arthroscopic guided treatment of complex intra-articular fractures or excision of joint foreign bodies are increasingly performed by minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery.

In what situations can we talk about advanced arthroscopic surgery techniques?

There are situations in which surgery requires a thorough knowledge of anatomy, extensive experience in the field and surgeons super-specialized in the treatment of certain conditions in order to be able to speak of excellent results.

At Ortokinetic we successfully perform a series of arthroscopic interventions
that require advanced knowledge in the field such as:

Arthroscopic transfer of the coracoid in shoulder instability (Arthroscopic Latarjet)
Revision of rotator cuff reconstruction in case of failure of previous operations
Balloon subacromial interposition arthroplasty
Upper shoulder capsule reconstruction in irreparable rotator cuff injuries
Revision of anterior cruciate ligament tears

How do I choose a surgeon for my problem?

There are routine operations in which most orthopaedic surgeons will treat you with similar results, the only difference being personal skills and professional experience. One thing to take into account would be the surgeon’s experience in performing the type of surgery you need and possibly the results obtained.

In general we can say that a surgeon can perform a surgery with good results if he or she routinely performs at least 15 operations of that type per year. The more years of experience the less chance of error.

The same applies to complicated surgeries where overspecialization means that the number of surgeons who frequently perform certain types of surgery is very small. An open discussion with your doctor is indicated.
