How do I choose a surgeon for my problem?
There are routine operations in which most orthopaedic surgeons will treat you with similar results, the only difference being personal skills and professional experience. One thing to take into account would be the surgeon’s experience in performing the type of surgery you need and possibly the results obtained.
In general we can say that a surgeon can perform a surgery with good results if he or she routinely performs at least 15 operations of that type per year. The more years of experience the less chance of error.
The same applies to complicated surgeries where overspecialization means that the number of surgeons who frequently perform certain types of surgery is very small. An open discussion with your doctor is indicated.
