Rheumatology

Rheumatology, or rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, deals with the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of patients with non-surgical musculoskeletal disorders.

Because they are usually painful, acute or chronic, they prevent the musculoskeletal system from functioning properly.
The generic name is rheumatism.

Specific conditions:

Inflammatory joint and periarticular inflammatory conditions: bursitis, capsulitis, entezitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis, Dupuytren’s syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, cervico-brachial neuralgia, tendinous calcifications of the shoulder or Achilles tendon, calcific trochanteric bursitis

Inflammatory, autoimmune diseases: acute rheumatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, psoriatic arthritis
Degenerative conditions caused by degeneration and wear and tear of the joints or arthrosis of the limbs such as gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis, spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation.

Metabolic disorders: osteoporosis, osteomalacia
Diseases caused by the presence of crystals in joints: gout, chondrocalcinosis, calcifications
Infectious joint diseases: Lyme disease, tuberculotic arthritis, gonococcal arthritis

Diagnostic methods used:

The diagnostic methods used in rheumatology are multiple: biochemical analysis, immunologic tests, genetic tests, bone density measurement.
In our medical centers we can complete the investigations in order to establish a correct diagnosis with imaging investigations.

Treatment methods

Drug treatment and careful monitoring by the rheumatologist: steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, immunologic modulating therapies, bone anti-resorptive treatment in osteoporosis.
