The use of ultrasound in orthopaedics is gaining more and more ground due to the benefits it brings in clarifying diagnosis during orthopaedic examination. Orthopaedic surgeons have realized ultrasound’s ability to

provides a rapid, non-invasive, portable and real-time examination of soft tissues. Ultrasound has become an indispensable tool in many centers and is referred to as the orthopaedic stethoscope.

It is also used to examine patients who have suffered trauma. Ultrasound is a quick, inexpensive and non-invasive method of examination that can be used even in patients who have metal implants.

Ultrasound is used for:

assess fracture healing
pre- and postoperative patient assessment
monitoring the evolution of hip dysplasia in children
diagnosis of mechanical impingement
diagnosis of shoulder rotator cuff tear
diagnosis of bone and soft tissue infections
diagnosis of tendon and ligament injuries
diagnosis of peripheral nerve compression
platelet-rich plasma therapy
needle guidance in intra-articular infiltrations
guidance in peripheral nerve blocks (regional anesthesia)
various diagnostics

Ultrasound is also recognized for its healing properties and is used in physiotherapy and to accelerate fracture healing –(see ESWT-link).

The evolution of technology means that modern ultrasound scanners are successfully replacing more expensive investigations in many cases – such as MRI.
The ultrasound scanner used in the Ortokinetic clinic is of the latest generation and uses a 16 MHz probe for an accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders. The software of this product allows ultrasound-guided punctures to be performed in complete safety, comparable to radiologically guided infiltrations.
