Which medical procedures are specific to ENT and exactly how they happen:
Nose, mouth and throat examination
With the help of a nasal speculum, the ENT doctor checks the nasal fossae and with the auricular speculum he analyzes the eardrum. The tongue, teeth, tongue blade, palatine tonsils and other anatomical parts of the oropharynx are investigated using a mouthpiece. The larynx or speech organ is examined with a small mirror. All these maneuvers, although they may be unpleasant, are painless.
Laryngoscopy
With an upright posture on the ENT chair with the tongue as far out as possible, the doctor can visualize more clearly the base of the tongue and the larynx. He uses a small mirror behind the back of the neck and with the help of a light looks at the mirrored image. This also checks the movement of the vocal cords. This examination takes on average 5-10 minutes.
A gag reflex may occur when the mirror is placed in the throat. You may feel discomfort when the doctor pulls on your tongue.
Nasal and laryngeal endoscopy
If the doctor observes a change in the nasal fossa or if he considers that it is necessary to visualize the area behind the nose, he will request an endoscopic examination during which he will use a video camera to visualize the areas of interest up close.
The most common maneuvers of this type are nasal and laryngeal endoscopy with a rigid rod and flexible videofibroscopy.
Nasal endoscopy is performed with a very thin rod and local anesthesia beforehand and helps the doctor visualize the inside of the nasal passages and the area behind the nose called the cavum or nasopharynx.
Laryngeal endoscopy is also performed with a rod and helps the doctor visualize the vocal cords.
Other maneuvers that can be performed in the office are cranial nerve examinations and vestibular tests to investigate balance problems. If hearing is poor, your doctor will recommend an audiogram and possibly an impedance test.
The ENT examination does not involve pain, although most patients may feel stressed, a visit to the doctor is recommended whenever there are any of the above symptoms or discomfort.
